Molecular Diagnostics Technologist (MDT)

Once you receive notice from ·¬ÇÑÓ°ÊÓwith approval, you may proceed.


  • If you are taking the exam at school, your instructor will provide the exam date and time.
  • If you are taking the exam at a Pearson VUE testing center location, you will schedule your own exam.

MDT Eligibility Routes

Medical Laboratory Scientist Certification Route â–¼

Applicant shall have graduated with a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency* (or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution as certified by a foreign transcript evaluation agency approved by AMT)

AND shall hold a certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or equivalent

AND shall have completed a minimum of 6 months of acceptable molecular science experience within the last 5 years.

  • The experience must have been in at least one of the seven clinical laboratory disciplines: Molecular Biology, Genetics/Genomics, Histocompatibility, Infectious Disease Testing, Tumor Markers, Oncology/Hematology, Mass Spectrometry.

*Program or institution must be accredited by a regional or national accreditation agency approved by the US Department of Education (DOE), the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or otherwise approved by AMT.

Molecular Science Program Route â–¼

Applicant shall have graduated with a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency* (or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution as certified by a foreign transcript evaluation agency approved by AMT)

AND shall have completed a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biological science, chemistry, mathematics, and/or medical science courses

AND shall have completed a diagnostic molecular science program within the past 5 years.

If completed more than 5 years ago, a minimum of 6 months of acceptable molecular science experience within the last 5 years

  • The experience must have been in at least one of the seven clinical laboratory disciplines: Molecular Biology, Genetics/Genomics, Histocompatibility, Infectious Disease Testing, Tumor Markers, Oncology/Hematology, Mass Spectrometry.

*Program or institution must be accredited by a regional or national accreditation agency approved by the US Department of Education (DOE), the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or otherwise approved by AMT.

Laboratory Science Education Route â–¼

Applicant shall have graduated with a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency* (or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution as certified by a foreign transcript evaluation agency approved by AMT)

AND shall have either:

  • Completed a major in biological science or chemistry, OR
  • Completed at least 30 semester hours of biological science, chemistry, and/or medical science courses

AND shall have completed a minimum of one year of acceptable molecular science experience within the last 5 years

  • The experience must have been in at least one of the seven clinical laboratory disciplines: Molecular Biology, Genetics/Genomics, Histocompatibility, Infectious Disease Testing, Tumor Markers, Oncology/Hematology, Mass Spectrometry.

*Program or institution must be accredited by a regional or national accreditation agency approved by the US Department of Education (DOE), the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or otherwise approved by AMT.

Advanced Science Degree Route â–¼

Applicant shall have graduated with a graduate-level degree in Chemistry, Biology, Immunology, Microbiology, Allied Health, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, or an appropriately related field from an institution accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency* (or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution as certified by a foreign transcript evaluation agency approved by AMT)

AND shall have completed a minimum of 6 months of acceptable molecular science experience within the last 5 years

  • The experience must have been in at least one of the seven clinical laboratory disciplines: Molecular Biology, Genetics/Genomics, Histocompatibility, Infectious Disease Testing, Tumor Markers, Oncology/Hematology, Mass Spectrometry.
